OUR STORY

Established in the 1930’s A Gleadall are proud that they are the fourth generation of jewellers, a business that was founded by Albert who understood the importance of working with family. He worked with his three sons as a stamper for Smith & Ewen originally. Due to The Depression in the early 1930s the family were put out of work and were forced to go their separate ways. It was then that ‘Al’ Gleadall decided to set up on his own, using the skills he had already carefully crafted in his own home, by creating lockets for US servicemen based in Britain.

At the end of World War II Al then employed his brother Ernest. At this time, the company premises were located in the backyard of 41 Warstone Lane, Hockley in the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

In 1954, Brian Gleadall joined the business as the three generations worked together as one. The firm was made a partnership in 1960 and renamed as A Gleadall & Son, which was then relocated to 4 Hylyon Street before moving in 1973 to the Big Peg in Vyse Street.

The family business continued when Nigel joined the business in 1973. The business became a Limited company in 2001. Nigel was then joined by his daughter Alex in 2005 and his son William in 2012 and both continue as expert jewellers into the fifth generation with over 100 years in the jewellery business located in the jewellery quarter developing the business with modern practices as well as using traditional skills and techniques.
